Perry offered to drive us the three hours to Vegas so I could focus on Mom. It wasn’t every day I got her all to myself, let alone for a whole weekend. She’s like a bright balloon that floats just out of reach, hovering high enough I can never quite grab on.

As we backed out of the driveway of Grandma’s house I turned to Mom in the backseat and asked, “How come the cops raided our house anyway?”

I thought she’d be surprised by the question, but she didn’t even flinch. “Because Moo Moo,” she said, like it was obvious. “I robbed like three hundred houses.”

“Damn, three hundred?” I said. “Why?”
